The inspiration for this fun, festive project comes from Tom Wolfe’s classic 1968 book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, in which a group of young bohemian artists paint tree trunks with Day-Glo paint.

For Art in the Dark, Amy and Jessamyn are also going to decorate tree trunks – only with materials that are easily removable and not harmful to the trees – with colourful patterns inspired by the many cultures of Auckland. The artists are interested in the mobility of different groups of peoples and the way this enriches our multicultural city. As well as this, the patterns will reference the ways in which cultural images and patterns are appropriated and recontextualised within the world of fashion. As a hub of fashion and culture in Auckland, their piece will sit particularly well in the context of Ponsonby.

Amy Potenger & Jessamyn Gemming

Amy Potenger and Jessamyn Gemming are Auckland based artists who have recently graduated from Auckland University with Bachelors in Visual Arts. They both have practices which centre around the process of sampling and remixing images and materials from various sources, including books, magazines and the internet, with outcomes in collage, drawing and painting. As founding members of Artstation’s Youth Art Committee, Amy and Jessamyn have also curated exhibitions and organised fun art events for Auckland’s young creatives.

To launch their new exhibition space side way - www.facebook.com/sideway.yac - the Youth Art Committee will be staging a collaborative art making performance at Artstation. Come to the print room to watch the artists as they are allocated various restrictions on their bodies and behaviour while they use found material to make small objects, sculpture and drawing. Performance from 2pm, live music at 4pm and an official opening of side way at 6pm where some of the work made during the performance will be installed.
Any work not chosen for side way's first show can be taken away by the audience after 6!

This is an exhibition I recently helped curate as part of the Youth Art Committee based at Artstation. It was very successful, we sold about 62 works and got a lot of great feedback. Artists Alliance will be featuring Spilt Milk! in the Oily Rag.

Youth Art Committee present Spilt Milk! - a cash and carry show at Artstation featuring the work of exciting young artists.

All work is under $250 and can be taken away at the time of purchase so that another interesting work can take its place.

'Scratchy Bacon Overtake' - Sketchbook Project 2011

This is the sketchbook I created for the 2011 Sketchbook Project. My theme was 'The greatest story ever told', so I wanted my sketchbook to be as epic as possible. I recycled subject matter used in my last semester at art school, and I revisited materials that I used in 2009. I was really interested in transference between pages and played a lot with making holes in the book. The project has both consolidated and opened up ideas I've had, and will be an excellent stepping stone for my next body of work.

'Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country.

After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.

28836 artists from 94 countries around the world are participating. The tour starts February, 2011.'
